A 2017 Stanford University Business School study on investment strategies reviewed 885 investments made across 681 different Venture Capital investment firms. The report observed that when selecting investments, fund managers saw the calibre of the leadership team as the single most important factor driving the investment decision.  They also attributed the likelihood of investment success to the actions of the team, not the qualities of the product. The same report also noted that only 33% of original the CEOs of these VC-backed businesses were still in place at time of IPO.
